Greet Visitors

Join the friendly and informative Autry staff in welcoming and guiding museum visitors. You can volunteer at special events like Sizzling Summer Nights and American Indian Arts Festival.

Help with Programs

Volunteers who love to be in the middle of the action love to help with our public programs. We need the most assistance with our big festivals—everything from directing visitors to the event locations to staffing booths and interacting with families. Smaller programs may call for taking tickets and checking RSVP lists. You can choose from theatre and music performances, lectures, festivals, and film series.

Become a Docent

Expand your understanding of the American West! Autry docents provide guided tours of core galleries and special exhibitions to diverse audiences while gaining intimate knowledge of the museum and its collections. You don’t need a degree in art or history!

Apply early, as class size is limited. Docent applications open on October 1, 2025. Docent applications close Monday, March 3, 2025.

To apply to the 2025 docent class, please complete our Volunteer Application. Contact Thea McKay at tmckay@theautry.org for more information.

As an Autry docent, you will enjoy social and professional benefits, including Autry-sponsored parties and gatherings, potlucks, and field trips.

Autry docents conduct tours for schoolchildren one day during the week or twice a month on weekends for families and adult groups.

Training includes classes in Western history, art, and art history, material culture, education, touring techniques, and more.

Land Acknowledgment

The Autry Museum of the American West acknowledges the Gabrielino/Tongva peoples as the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar (the Los Angeles basin and So. Channel Islands). We recognize that the Autry Museum and its campuses are located on the traditional lands of Gabrielino/Tongva peoples and we pay our respects to the Honuukvetam (Ancestors), ‘Ahiihirom (Elders) and ‘Eyoohiinkem (our relatives/relations) past, present and emerging.
