A woman in a patterned shirt and cap helps a young boy pet a horse over a wooden fence. The scene is set outdoors with trees and sunlight in the background.

Volunteer

Join a dedicated community and make a difference! Volunteers are a vital part of the Autry's success, and some of the ways you can participate are listed below.

To become a volunteer, please complete our Volunteer Application

All applicants must be at least 18 years old.

To learn more, please contact Thea McKay at tmckay@theautry.org

Greet Visitors

Join the friendly and informative Autry staff in welcoming and guiding museum visitors. You can volunteer at special events like Sizzling Summer Nights and American Indian Arts Festival.

Help with Programs

Volunteers who love to be in the middle of the action love to help with our public programs. We need the most assistance with our big festivals—everything from directing visitors to the event locations to staffing booths and interacting with families. Smaller programs may call for taking tickets and checking RSVP lists. Choose from theatre and music performances, lectures, festivals, and film series.

Become a Docent

Expand your understanding of the American West! Autry docents provide guided tours of core galleries and featured exhibitions to diverse audiences while gaining intimate knowledge of the museum and its collections. No degree in art or history required!

Applications are currently closed for our 2026 docent class. Applications for our 2027 docent class will open later this year.

Autry docents conduct tours for schoolchildren one day during the week or twice a month on weekends for families and adult groups. Training includes classes in Western history, visual art, art history, material culture, education, touring techniques, and more. As an Autry docent, you will enjoy social and professional benefits, including Autry-sponsored parties and gatherings, potlucks, and field trips.

Land Acknowledgment

The Autry Museum of the American West acknowledges the Gabrielino/Tongva peoples as the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar (the Los Angeles basin and So. Channel Islands). We recognize that the Autry Museum and its campuses are located on the traditional lands of Gabrielino/Tongva peoples and we pay our respects to the Honuukvetam (Ancestors), ‘Ahiihirom (Elders) and ‘Eyoohiinkem (our relatives/relations) past, present and emerging.
